Terms of Service

Last updated 2026-09-24. Changes: named the postal address, said plainly that a chart names no star, listed only the print partners we use, and added the refunds and cookies pages.

These terms are the agreement between you and PaintedApp, LLC, which runs Painted Heavens. Buying from us, or using the site, means you accept them. If you do not, please do not order.

What you are buying

A Painted Heavens piece is a chart of the sky over one place at one instant. You give us a date, a time, and a place; we geocode the place, resolve its timezone, convert your local time to a single exact instant, and compute the sky from astronomical catalogues. What you see on screen is what gets printed.

A chart shows the sky at a place and time. It does not name a star, register one, or sell one, and nothing we make claims to. No star can be named by purchase: the International Astronomical Union does not recognise bought names. Many people order a chart to remember someone; it is a keepsake of a real night, not a memorial registry and not a certificate.

Your chart is computed, not generated by AI: every star, the Moon and the planets are placed by our engine from published data. Some marketing images on this site, such as the opening film and the room scenes, were made with AI image tools; the charts shown in the gallery are real engine output.

You must be 18 or older, or the age of majority where you live, to order.

Made to order

Every physical piece is computed and printed for your moment alone. Nothing is held in stock and nothing can be resold. Confirm your date, time, and place carefully before you pay. Your order goes to the printer within minutes of payment, so a personalised piece cannot be cancelled or returned once it is under way, except where the fault is ours or the law says otherwise. The refunds page sets out what we do when something goes wrong.

If something arrives wrong

If your piece arrives damaged, defective, or not what you ordered, write to us within 30 days of delivery with a photograph and we will remake it or refund you. That is our own promise and it sits on top of your statutory rights, which nothing here reduces.

Your moment, your rights

The details you enter stay yours. You grant us only what we need to compute, print, and deliver your order, and, if you ask for it, to remind you of the anniversary. There are no uploads here: you give us a date, a time, a place and an email, never a photograph.

Your purchase licenses the piece for personal use: hang it, gift it, photograph it. It does not transfer copyright in our artwork or templates, and it does not license commercial use, resale, or merchandise. If you want a commercial arrangement, write to us and ask.

Fair use of the site

Please do not scrape the site, resell access to it, attempt to defeat rate limits, or use it to produce anything unlawful, including place names or captions that use someone else’s trademark or impersonate a real person. We may decline or refund any order at our discretion.

The honest limits

We compute each chart from published astronomical data and print on archival stock. Even so: screens and paper differ, star magnitudes are rendered to be legible rather than photometrically exact, and a place name resolves to a coordinate that may sit a short distance from where you picture it. A chart is a work of art built on real astronomy, not a scientific instrument, and it should not be relied on for navigation, timing, or any decision that matters. It commemorates; it never predicts.

The site and everything on it are provided as they are, without warranties of any kind. To the fullest extent the law allows, our total liability for any claim arising out of an order or these terms will not exceed what you paid for the order it concerns, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

Prices and payment

Prices are shown at checkout in US dollars and charged by Stripe; we never see or store your card details. Shipping is a flat rate per item, shown at checkout before you pay. Prodigi prints and ships each piece. Import duties, where they apply, are the recipient’s responsibility.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Oregon, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and disputes will be heard there — except where consumer-protection law where you live gives you the right to bring proceedings in your own country. Before filing anything, please write to us so we can try to settle it directly.

Changes

We may update these terms. The date at the top always says when. Orders are governed by the terms in force when you placed them.
