# Painted Heavens > Name a date, time and place. We compute the true night sky of that moment from the Hipparcos catalogue and print it as fine art. The sky remembers. Painted Heavens by Painted.App. Run by PaintedApp, LLC (https://painted.app). The full account: https://paintedheavens.com/llms-full.txt Painted Heavens is a personalization studio in the Painted family (https://painted.app). A customer names a meaningful moment — a date, a time, a place — and we compute the real night sky over that spot at that instant and print it as museum-grade fine art. The sky remembers. We paint it back. ## What it is - Real astronomy, shown transparently. We place every naked-eye star (to magnitude 6.5 — roughly 9,000 of them) from the Hipparcos catalogue, still the standard reference for naked-eye stars. Their catalogue coordinates are real measured positions, not artistic scatter. - The Moon's exact phase and the positions of Mercury through Saturn come from NASA/JPL's DE440 ephemeris via Skyfield. That's why a chart of a total solar eclipse computes to a New Moon — because it was one. - Every chart prints its coordinates and the catalogue it was computed from. The margin prints the place, the date, the local time, the coordinates, and the source catalogue — unless you turn the caption off, or choose a round format, which carries no margin. We show our work. That transparency is the authority. - We commemorate a moment that truly happened — we never predict. No horoscopes, no fortunes, no claims about the future. - The stars, the Moon and the planets are computed fact. Anything traditional is labelled as tradition. ## How it works 1. Name the moment. A date, a time, a place. A birth, a vow, a last goodbye — or an ordinary night that turned out to matter. 2. We compute the sky. From the Hipparcos catalogue and a JPL ephemeris we resolve the true position of every star, the Moon's exact phase, and the visible planets — for that instant, over that spot on Earth. 3. We paint it back. The real sky, drawn in your chosen style and printed as museum-grade fine art. Coordinates and source engraved in the margin, because the truth is the point. The mechanism, step by step (each heading on the page is an anchor, so a passage can be cited directly): - Your moment (https://paintedheavens.com/how-we-compute-the-sky#your-moment): A date, a time, and a place. We geocode the place to a latitude and longitude and resolve its timezone, then convert your local wall-clock time to a single exact instant in UTC. - The stars (https://paintedheavens.com/how-we-compute-the-sky#the-stars): We place every naked-eye star (to magnitude 6.5 — roughly 9,000 of them) from the Hipparcos catalogue, still the standard reference for naked-eye stars. Their catalogue coordinates are real measured positions, not artistic scatter. - The rotation (https://paintedheavens.com/how-we-compute-the-sky#the-rotation): We compute the local apparent sidereal time for your instant and longitude, then rotate each star into horizon coordinates — altitude and azimuth — for your exact spot on Earth. Stars below the horizon are dropped; the zenith sits at the centre of the disc. - The Moon & planets (https://paintedheavens.com/how-we-compute-the-sky#moon-and-planets): The Moon's exact phase and the positions of Mercury through Saturn come from NASA/JPL's DE440 ephemeris via Skyfield. That's why a chart of a total solar eclipse computes to a New Moon — because it was one. - The projection (https://paintedheavens.com/how-we-compute-the-sky#the-projection): The visible hemisphere is drawn with a stereographic projection onto a disc — the same projection the great celestial atlases used — so constellation figures keep their shape. - The engraving (https://paintedheavens.com/how-we-compute-the-sky#the-engraving): The margin prints the place, the date, the local time, the coordinates, and the source catalogue — unless you turn the caption off, or choose a round format, which carries no margin. We show our work. That transparency is the authority. ## Pricing All prices in US dollars.
